Langley City, B.C. – Langley City is rolling out a cleaner, greener, and more efficient way to manage household waste. Beginning July 9, 2025, single-family homes and non-strata townhomes will begin receiving new garbage and organics bins as part of the City’s Automated Waste Collection Program, which launches in August 2025, when residents can start using the bins.
“This new automated system is a major step forward in how we manage waste in Langley City," said David Pollock, Director of Engineering, Parks & Environment. "By using electric trucks and standardized bins, we’re not only making collection more efficient—we’re also reducing emissions, improving street cleanliness, and supporting our long-term sustainability goals.”
What’s Changing?
The new system introduces:
- Automated collection using electric trucks, reducing emissions and noise.
- Standardized 240-litre bins for garbage and organics with wheels, offering more capacity and easier handling.
- RFID-tagged bins to improve route efficiency and ensure reliable service by tracking pick-ups
This modernization supports Langley City’s commitment to sustainability, cleaner streets, and improved service delivery.
Benefits of the New System
- Less landfill waste: Better sorting keeps organics away from landfills.
- Cleaner streets: Sealed bins prevent litter and animal access.
- Healthier environment: Electric trucks reduce pollution.
- Efficient service: Automation reduces collection time.
Rollout Schedule
- Starting July 9, 2025 (and continuing the following weeks in July): Delivery of one 240L garbage bin and one 240L organics bin.
- August 2025: The first collection using the new bins begins on or after August 1, 2025. Garbage and organic collection days remain the same.
How to Use Your New Bins
- Place bins at the curb by 7:30 AM on your collection day.
- Position bins with wheels facing your home and lids opening toward the street.
- Leave at least 1 metre (3 feet) between bins and other objects.
- Ensure lids are fully closed—overfilled bins may not be collected.
- Store bins within your property (garage, backyard, or side yard). Do not leave them on sidewalks or roads.
