Stage 1 water restrictions will be in effect from May 1 until October 15.
All water is drinking water. Help conserve water for what we need it most — for drinking, washing, and cleaning.
During all stages, residents must ensure:
- All hoses have an automatic shut-off device (e.g., spring-loaded nozzle)
- When watering lawns or gardens (as permitted), water must not unnecessarily run off impermeable surfaces such as driveways, sidewalks, or curbs
- Hoses and taps must not run unnecessarily
- Irrigation systems must not be faulty, leaking or misdirected
Read about the residential and non‑residential water restriction stages below to see what is allowed at each stage.
Stage 1
During stage 1, lawn watering is allowed once per week, in the morning, unless you have a valid Water Exemption Permit.
Open the drop-downs below for full details.
Stages 2, 3, and 4 Activations
Stages 2, 3, and 4 are activated during drier months and periods of high demand to manage drinking water. These stages are activated by Metro Vancouver or Langley City based on the amount of water in the reservoir and expected rainfall and/or snowmelt.
Water Exemption Permits
Residential and commercial properties can apply for a water permit to water lawns during stage 1 water restrictions for:
- New lawns
- Existing lawns to treat European Chafer Beetles
All approved Water Exemption Permits must be displayed on the property and are valid for 21 days.
During stage 2 restrictions, existing Water Exemption Permits are valid until they expire. However, they cannot be renewed, and new permits will not be issued.

MetroVancouver Quicklinks
Ways to reduce your water usage
- Use a watering timer to have your sprinkler turn off after an hour
- Sweep patios, decks, and driveways with a broom instead of a hose
- Leave grass clippings on your lawn to trap moisture, reduce evaporation, and break down to feed your lawn naturally
- Water vegetable gardens in the morning, near the roots, and by hand
- When water restrictions end for the season, continue conserving water delivered to your home
