Langley City is updating its waste collection to improve efficiency, cleanliness, and sustainability with automated collection carts. These bins are designed to make waste disposal cleaner and more efficient. The carts will be collected by an electric truck, reflecting the City’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
The new bins will also be tagged with Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) tags to help track the collection of carts to optimize routes and ensure all bins are picked up.
The 240L bins are larger than a standard 80L garbage bin, making waste disposal more convenient. With wheels, the carts are easier to move.
Benefits of the system
Ease of use: the carts have wheels at the bottom to help with moving.
Less landfill waste: better sorting will divert organics from the landfill.
Cleaner streets: Sealed bins reduce litter and prevent animals from getting into them, while standardized bins keep streets looking neater and tidier.
Healthy environment: The carts will be picked up by an electric truck, reducing pollution
Efficient service: automated service means more efficient pick-ups, saving taxpayer dollars.
How to use the carts
Place bins at the curb by 7:30 AM on your scheduled garbage and organics collection day. Your collection day will not change and there will be no changes to recycling collection.
Bins should be placed with the wheels towards your house and with the lid opening towards the street.
Leave at least 1 metre (3 feet) of space between each bin and any obstacles such as other bins, parked cars, poles, fences, or mailboxes.
Ensure the lid is fully closed; overfilled bins may not be collected.
Do not block sidewalks or driveways.
Store the carts within your property boundary -- in your garage, backyard, side of your home or front yard. Do not store them on the road or sidewalk.

If you're finding that your green waste bin fills up quickly, here are some tips to manage the contents:
Compact Your Green Waste The new green waste bins have no weight limit because they’re emptied by automated trucks. Press down on your green waste, organics, and yard clippings to remove air pockets and maximize space.
Use Green Waste as Natural Fertilizer Consider composting some of your green waste at home. It’s a great way to enrich your soil and reduce the amount going into your bin.
Upgrade Your Organic Bin After one month, consider upgrading to a larger 360L bin if you consistently have more green waste than your current bin can handle. To do this, contact Emterra Environmental at 604.635.0999 or email col@emterra.ca.
Request an additional Organic bin for:

It is recommended to use the new bins for at least one month before exchanging your default 240L garbage or organics bin. This new default bin size is three times the typical size of an 80L bin. Allow time to see if the new bins meet your needs before considering changing to a bigger or smaller-sized bin(s).
There is no cost for the first exchange of your garbage or organics bins. If you need to exchange the bins a second time, there will be a fee to make further changes.
To make an exchange, please contact Emterra Environmental at 604.635.0999 or email col@emterra.ca.
*To ensure we are meeting the community's needs, the City of Langley will be waiving the $10 service cost to exchange the 240L bins for a 360L or 120L bin.

No, this is a city program being implemented for all single-family residences and non-strata townhomes.
Your existing garbage, recycling and/or organics container belongs to you. There are several creative and environmentally friendly ways to repurpose these containers and keep them out of the landfill, such as:
Storage for tools, potting soil, mulch, and animal feed
Rain barrels
Flower or vegetable planters
Collect your depot items (i.e. Flexible plastics, glass, foam packaging or refundable drink containers)
The City is currently working with the contractor to develop a program to give residents an option to get rid of old bins, either by providing one-time drop-off locations or curbside pickup.
Once confirmed, this section will be updated.
