Langley City Adopts Accessibility Plan to Build a More Inclusive Community

Date

Langley, B.C. – Langley City has officially adopted its new Accessibility Plan, a comprehensive roadmap focused on creating a more inclusive and accessible community for residents and visitors of all abilities.

The Accessibility Plan outlines the City’s commitment to identifying, removing, and preventing barriers across public spaces, programs, and services. Developed in alignment with the Accessible British Columbia Act, the plan will guide City initiatives and workplans over the next decade and be reviewed and updated regularly to ensure continued progress.

The plan was informed through extensive community engagement, including input from residents with disabilities, caregivers, community organizations, and City staff. Feedback highlighted key areas for improvement such as pedestrian infrastructure, public washrooms, and accessibility within City facilities, programs, and communications.

The plan supports Langley City’s Strategic Plan priority to cultivate an inclusive community by helping make City spaces, services, and programs more accessible for everyone.

“This Accessibility Plan reflects our commitment to building a community where everyone can fully participate,” said Kim Hilton, Director, Recreation, Culture and Community Services. “By listening to our community and taking meaningful action, we are making Langley City more inclusive, accessible, and welcoming for all.”

The plan addresses several priority areas, including:
  • Built environment (e.g., sidewalks, parks, and public buildings)
  • Transportation and connectivity
  • Programs and services
  • Information and communication
  • City employment and how the City buys goods and services

Implementation of the plan will be phased over the short, medium, and long term, allowing the City to prioritize key improvements while planning for future needs. Progress will be reported yearly, and actions will be integrated into annual financial planning processes.

Langley City will continue working closely with its Accessibility Advisory Committee and community partners to advance the plan and ensure ongoing accountability.
