Langley, BC – Langley City is proud to introduce its new 2024 Economic Development Strategy (EDS), which replaces the 2016 version. This updated plan will build on the success of local businesses, innovation and investments already happening in Langley. Its new vision aims to strengthen the economy and address current challenges while taking advantage of new opportunities and trends, all while keeping our resident’s needs top of mind.

The strategy works closely with Langley City’s Strategic Plan and the Innovation District Plan. The focus is on growth, innovation, job creation, attracting investment, and supporting businesses as they grow and thrive. This strategy sets out a vision for a successful future for Langley.

“This new Economic Development Strategy is a bold and ambitious plan to support our local businesses and entrepreneurs,” said Mayor Nathan Pachal. “It was shaped with input from the community and will help us tap into our regional strengths. By working together, we can create an exciting future for Langley City.”

Key Goals of the 2024 Economic Development Strategy:

  1. Innovation:  Exploring industry opportunities in food and beverage technology and advancing the Innovation District Plan; and Exploring community-centred accelerator strategies that focus on economic, social, and cultural health as the three pillars.
  1. Enterprise: Supporting the growth of local entrepreneurs and strengthening partnerships with regional organizations.
  1. Downtown Destination: Continue to develop a vibrant and thriving downtown area.
  1. Land Matters: Planning for efficient land use and vertical growth.
  1. Investment Readiness: Preparing the city for growth by strengthening economic collaboration locally and regionally.
  1. Enablers:  Strengthening community development through ideas shared by residents.

This strategy will be implemented over the next three years, starting in 2025. It aligns with Langley City’s 2023-2028 Strategic Plan and other community plans to ensure Langley continues to be a great place to live, work, and invest.

The strategy was developed after extensive input from the community, including workshops, surveys, and interviews with local businesses, residents, and community groups. This feedback helped shape the plan, which was then approved by Council on December 2, 2024.

Careful planning and ongoing collaboration will be needed to make this strategy a reality.

The Strategy will work with the City’s budget, supplemented by external funding sources and grants from senior levels of government.

Langley City’s 2024 Economic Development Strategy is an important step in supporting sustainable growth and ensuring the city remains an attractive place for residents, businesses, and investors. It demonstrates Langley’s commitment to driving long-term economic success and providing a brighter future for the whole community.
