Langley City, B.C. – A new mural at Langley City Hall is being used to support the City’s work to promote crime prevention and create welcoming public spaces where residents feel connected to their community.

Titled “United Communities Are Safe Communities”, the mural was inspired and proposed by Brian Doyle who passed away in 2024 before seeing it completed. It was led through a public art initiative jointly led by the City’s Arts, Recreation, Culture and Heritage Committee and the Community Safety Awareness Committee.

Installed on the north-facing wall of City Hall’s civic plaza, the mural was created by local artist and Langley Secondary School graduate Carla Maskall, who spent her childhood in Langley City. In her mural, she drew on her memories of feeling safe, supported and inspired by Langley City’s sense of community.

“I wanted to reflect the spirit of the City–the people, the storefronts, the welcoming feeling of growing up here,” she adds. “This mural is a thank you to Langley, and to my family who are still here cheering me on.”

Maskall’s father, George Vanthournout, a long-time Langley resident and artist, helped paint the mural before recently diagnosed with dementia.

“He’s lived in Langley for over 43 years,” says Maskall. “Even now, as his memory fades, he still asks about the mural. That brings me to tears. Having him paint with me–even for just one day–is something I will always treasure.”

Created with acrylic paint on a 4-by-8-foot panel, the mural was designed to be moveable and accessible as part of the City’s public art collection.

The community is invited to view the mural at City Hall and learn more about local crime prevention efforts and community safety programs by visiting LangleyCity.ca/CrimePrevention.
