Langley City, B.C. – A vibrant new mosaic mural has been installed in Langley City, celebrating the diversity of local bird species alongside themes of community, harmony, and creativity. The project, led by mosaic artist Jessica Fairweather, brings together residents, students, and community groups to create a meaningful piece of public art designed to inspire and engage for years to come.
“This project advances the City’s Recreation and Culture goals around connection, inclusion, and community wellbeing,” said Kim Hilton, Director of Recreation, Culture and Community Services. “We chose to work with Jessica because of her collaborative approach and her focus on bringing people together through the process of creating art. A mosaic was a natural fit because it mirrors how communities are formed from many individual contributions. We invite everyone to see the mural and celebrate this inspiring addition to the City's growing collection of public art.”
The mural was created with the involvement of Raphael House, the Arts, Recreation, Culture and Heritage Committee, and Grade 5 students from Douglas Park Community School, whose enthusiasm, care, and creativity shaped the project.
Mosaic artist and educator Jessica Fairweather spent nearly nine months creating the three-panel, 60-square-foot mural, featuring stained glass, tile, and metal framing. The bold, dynamic design shows local birds in flight, symbolizing inclusion and connection through shared space.
“This project has been a dream in many ways,” said Fairweather. “Not only because of its size and lasting materials, but because it allowed me to share my passion for mosaics with others and create something special together. Mosaics are more than art—they’re a metaphor for unity. Just like a community is strong because of its people, a mosaic is strong because of its many pieces.”
Jennifer’s husband, James Godfrey, built the wooden panels and framed the mosaics with plexiglass and metal for lasting durability.
Installed in the newly renovated Douglas Recreation Centre at Douglas Park, the mural invites residents and visitors to pause and celebrate the local environment, and the power of community collaboration.
Jessica is teaching a 3 hour glass mosaic workshop at Timms Community Centre on May 16, in partnership with the Langley Arts Council. To learn more about Jessica Fairweather and her work, visit: www.JFairWStudios.com.
