Langley, B.C. – For more than 50 years, Langley City has helped Grade 5 students from Langley City and the Township of Langley build life-saving skills through its Operation Waterproof program. In partnership with the Langley School District, the program focuses on water safety, drowning prevention, and emergency response, and runs from May 4 to June 22.
“This work reflects Langley City’s long-standing commitment to community safety. I participated in Operation Waterproof as a Grade 5 student in the Langley School District and learned valuable skills that stayed with me. I later taught the program for 10 years, and now, as Director of Recreation, Culture and Community Services, it is meaningful to see the impact it continues to have on families in our community,” said Kim Hilton, Director of Recreation, Culture and Community Services.
Operation Waterproof goes beyond swimming lessons, providing students with the knowledge and confidence they need to stay safe in and around water. The program teaches key water safety skills for pools and lakes, as well as for boating and ice safety.
“When students learn how to recognize risks, respond in an emergency, and make safe choices around water, they take those skills with them beyond the pool and into everyday life,” said Karlo Tamondong, Recreation Supervisor at Langley City.
Participants also gain other practical skills, including:
- Recognizing risks and preventing water-related accidents
- Learning about the importance of wearing lifejackets
- Understanding how to respond in an emergency
- Basic first aid and assisting someone in distress
- Understanding when and how to call 911
By focusing on prevention and preparedness, students leave the program with greater awareness and the ability to make informed decisions, helping to reduce the risk of water-related incidents.
