Extra yard waste pilot program returns October 19 to November 27
Homes receiving City organics services can place additional seasonal yard waste in paper yard waste bags beside their organics cart on their regular collection day by 7:30AM. Only yard waste can go in the extra paper bags. Food scraps and other organics must go in the organics cart.
Who can participate: Homes receiving City organics collection services
Number of bags allowed: unlimited
Bag weight limit: Each bag must weigh under 20 kg (44 lbs)
No registration or stickers required: Place paper yard bags next to your organics cart by 7:30AM
Pickup date: Same day as your regular collection date, as shown in your Collection Guide
Accepted Extra Yard Waste:
Grass clippings
Leaves
Plant cuttings and prunings
Tree branches under 3 inches in diameter and 3 feet in length
Not Accepted Extra Yard Waste:
No stumps, rocks, sod, and soil.
No food scraps in extra yard waste bags.
No plastic bags (not even those labelled "biodegradable" or "compostable").

The City is running a third and final pilot to gather more accurate information about how residents use the service. During this phase, the City will also share education about proper organics sorting. Staff will use the results from all three pilots to assess service needs and develop recommendations for Council.
Yard waste can be placed in paper bags. Yard waste in anything other than paper bags will not be accepted.

This final pilot service will be monitored and reviewed according to the community's needs. The City’s goal is to reduce costs and minimize environmental impact by decreasing all types of waste pickups, including organic waste. After evaluating the service level needs, City staff will make a recommendation to Council for consideration.
